I love Romans 8 and how it talks about our adoption as sons!
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!‘ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.“
So powerful. We are brothers and sisters in Christ and it is such a blessing to have such a family when many of us lack in members or loving earthly families. In being family, it opens this wonderful opportunity for a deeper bonding and care because we all have Christ as our Father in common. We all love and live for Him and with that can then love one another. “We love because he first loved us.” -1 John 4:19 You are my brother or sister in Christ.
Romans 5:8, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” He died for us while we were still against Him in our sin and He adopted us while we are still imperfect and fighting the flesh.
This is what He calls us then to do! “But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven” Matthew 5:44. We are able to mirror the image of God by loving those against us like He has loved us when we are still against Him!
I was talking to a friend not long ago about this concept being so hard to grasp. Love was before creation, right? God – the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – all existed in perfect love towards one another. A God, that has forever existed loving Himself perfectly and being perfectly loved by Himself then created a creation that came to hate Him AND YET God still continues to love perfectly that which hates Him. He doesn’t need our love. He has perfect love from His other persons. He doesn’t need our relationship or need to love us. He has perfect relationship with His other persons. It must be so easy for the Father to love the Son and the Spirit because they love Him perfectly. But we live in hate against Him and He still chooses to love us. Takes “love is a choice” to a whole new level!
